On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I was in London for the first meeting of the steering group for our new European project, ART-AGE, Art based learning and active ageing. Voluntary Arts is one of five partner organisations in this two-year project funded by the European Union Grundtvig programme. The project will look at the impacts on individuals of learning through participating in the arts, with a particular focus on older people taking part in amateur arts activities. This week Daniel and I were joined in London by colleagues from Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. At this first meeting a lot of our time was taken with the formalities of agreeing project plans, budgets, procedures and protocols. We were indebted to Hans Jørgen Vodsgaard of Interfolk in Denmark who, drawing on his previous experience of European-funded projects, had done a massive amount of work drafting all the necessary paperwork, which made it very easy for the rest of us. Our project application had included partner organisations in Latvia and Slovenia but, unfortunately, they were not granted funding so we have had to adjust some of our plans accordingly. Although we didn’t have too much time to get into the real substance of the project at this first meeting, our few initial discussions were really interesting and I am looking forward to the next stage.
